The
Power of Visualization for Weight Loss
A long time ago, as part of some
of my coaching training, I had the opportunity to meet and work with Greg
Searle, the Olympic Gold Medal rower.
I will never forget his
inspiring introductory speech describing the preparation and coaching
techniques employed by their team coach that they all practised toward winning
their race.
‘Visualisation’ played a big part in this.
Greg explained how important it was for each of the team members to ‘see’
themselves winning, living the moment in the greatest detail they could. A bit
like running a ‘reel of the film’ in their imagination. Over and over again.
This was my first introduction
to understanding and discovering more about what visualisation is and how
powerful it can be if we choose to use it in our lives.
Visualisation had a positive
impact on Greg and his team members.
So just what is visualisation?
By starting to use our
imagination more consciously every day, just like Greg, we can create or
achieve what we want.
By ‘seeing’ a vision of
ourselves as we choose to be, our sub-conscious
mind supports us to become it. This isn’t philosophy, this is
physics!
Visualize
Some people don’t ‘see’ a mental
picture or image when they first close their eyes and try to visualize. It is
not at all necessary to mentally see an image.
People are about visualization
Some people say they see very clear,
sharp images when they close their eyes and imagine something. Others don’t
really ‘see’ anything, they sense or feel it, or they just sort of ‘think about
it’. That’s perfectly fine.
Some people are more visually
orientated, some are auditory, others are more kinaesthetic. We all use
our imaginations constantly – it’s impossible not to do so, so whatever process
you find yourself doing when you imagine is fine.
I decided to employ this
technique to help me release my weight.
Initially, I struggled to ‘see’
myself slim. I had to work at creating the image of my body in my imagination
as I wanted it to look like. I started slowly, imagining my right arm and right
leg. Then I gradually worked on this image until eventually, I could ‘see’ the
whole of myself as I wanted to be.
I then consciously worked on
seeing this image every day, as often as I could, whilst also exploring how I
was feeling looking like this, including a deep sense of gratitude and thanks
towards myself for achieving this, as if I were looking like it at that moment.
I will never forget the day in
June 2019, when I actually ‘walked’ into my vision of myself – I had achieved
my dream.
You can sum up effective visualization by the saying ‘If you can ‘see’ it, you can be it’!
